CONCORD, N.H. — Get primed for the fall hunting seasons at a series of evening talks by area hunting experts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings from August 24-September 14, 2011, at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, in Concord, N.H. Admission is free. No pre-registration needed. Topics include:
AUGUST 24, RESIDENT CANADA GOOSE TACTICS:
Few things can compare to a flock of geese coming into your decoy setup, says Ray Jackson, an avid waterfowl hunter who, along with Jay Levasseur, explore the early goose season in the first talk of the series. Both have many years of experience hunting geese and ducks in New Hampshire. They’ll cover all aspects of effective early season goose hunting including scouting, decoy set up, goose calling, safety and more. Jackson is the Northeast pro-staff director for Buck Gardner Calls, Tanglefree Industries and pro-staff for Mossy Oak Brand Camo. Levasseur is on the pro-staff for Buck Gardner Calls.
AUGUST 31, HUNTING DOMINANT WHITETAIL BUCKS:
Whitetail deer hunting in New Hampshire can be challenging. At this talk, you’ll pick up some key knowledge of deer biology that can help you understand deer sign and devise a deer hunting plan that increases your odds of harvesting a whitetail this fall. Presenter Dave Priebe is a seasoned outdoorsman, lifelong naturalist and a volunteer New Hampshire hunter education instructor; he’s also a Quaker Boy Game Calls pro-staff member. Priebe’s talk will cover the rut (the phases of male whitetail deer breeding behavior); scouting and identification of classes of deer in your area; hunting techniques and strategy during each rut phase; areas of greatest deer activity; and the effects of food, water, weather and humans on deer behavior.
SEPTEMBER 7, BIRD DOGS AND TRAINING EXPLORED:
Get the basics on training your bird dog at this talk by David Trahan, a well-known gun dog trainer and field trials trainer. Trahan and his wife Carol own and operate On Point Kennel; their dogs have won many titles and awards. Trahan brings over 20 years of pointing and flushing dog training experience. At this session, he will share some of the essentials when it comes to training your dog and, most importantly, training you on how to train your dog. This seminar is for those who have a bird dog, as well as those who would like a better-mannered dog. Please leave dogs at home.
SEPTEMBER 14, CALLING WHITETAILS:
Learn how to use calls and scent to bring deer to you this fall. Dean Vanier of North Woods Hunting Products has more than 35 years experience pursuing whitetails in the New England woodlands. His unique perspective on understanding the whitetail’s superior defense mechanisms and using them to your advantage will increase your odds of success in the deer woods. Vanier goes into detail on scouting techniques and explains how to use that information effectively during the three phases of the rut. This talk will give you a whole new perspective on hunting whitetails!
