How To Prepare for a Moose Hunt: Gear for the Trip
OutdoorHub 06.02.11
When moose hunting it is important to be as prepared as possible because you never know what you will run in to. You have to pay a lot of attention to detail but you cannot go overboard on equipment. Pack light, but try to pack exactly what you need. These are the things that I consider essentials:
- Gun, ammunition and sling- The large size of a moose means a suitable caliber rifle must be used. You should pick a rifle that maximizes your potential but still minimizes the animals unnecessary suffering or loss. Some popular moose calibers and bullet weights are: .30/06 Springfield 180, .308 Winchester 180, 7mm Remington Magnum 175, .300 Weatherby Magnum 180 and 7mm Weatherby Magnum 150.
- A sharp knife
- Thermos
- Binoculars
- Compass/GPS
- Moose Call
- Small chain saw
- A telescopic sight. Usually shots are made from a reasonable distance away, so making absolute sure that you make the shot will help you out in the long run.
For clothing you want to be very diversified because you do not know what weather you may run into. Wool outer clothing is preferable because it is quieter and has the ability to provide warmth even when wet. Rainwear is also always a good choice and hunter’s orange outer wear is a necessity.
