How To Build a Trapping Dirt Sifter

I had some free time on my hands and decided it would be a little more rewarding to build my own dirt sifter than to run out and spend $10 on one at the store.  Besides, I had some old lumber and it need to be used for something.  The only thing I had to run out and get to build this was some gutter screen which cost me about $3.

You will need a piece of 1×4, 4 foot long, a piece of 6″ x 3′ long metal gutter screen and some drywall screws and a few tools.  Get out your trusty saw and cut two pieces of the 1×4 into 10″ long pieces, with the remainder of the 1×4 cut two more pieces 6″ long.  Next cut your gutter screen into an 11.5″ long piece.

You can next get out a drill to pre-drill pilot holes into the wood to keep from splitting the ends.  Two or three screws in each joint should do the job.  Once you have your box fashioned you can lay the gutter screen on the bottom of the box and use drywall screws to fasten it to the bottom of the box.  That is all there is to it! Now you can drop it into your pot of trap dye when you’re boiling your tools for the upcoming season!  Good Luck!

Hello, I’m Mike Adams the co-owner and co-founder of Up North Journal.  My oldest son Mikey and I started Up North Journal back in April of 2007 as a weekly podcast that focused on what we did outdoors each week.  It has grown into a medium sized media outlet that now has 11 staff members that includes everything from audio, video all the way to outdoor journals.

Our staff members contribute to this publication so you will see stories from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Alabama, Iowa/Kansas and Alaska’s Arctic Circle!  We love to hunt anything that the law allows and we also spend quite a bit of time on the water fishing whether it be frozen or of the liquid variety.  You might see some of us at a local 3-D archery shoot or at some outdoor event at some of the local outdoor stores or you might even see us in the woods!  Feel free to look around our website www.upnorthjournal.com and take a look around.  Also make sure to stop by and visit our sponsors websites as well.  Hope to see you in the woods or on the water!
