How to Make Homemade Protein Powder

I like to add protein powder to my morning coffee. It’s a nice way to start my day because I typically don’t have a lot of time in the morning to eat so the protein powder helps fill me up for a few hours until I can get breakfast going. Not to mention, I’m not a huge breakfast fan.

When I’m out camping I also like a quick breakfast of just a protein powder shake because it’s convenient and gives me the necessary energy to do what needs to be done at camp. The same goes for hunting trips, a quick mix of protein powder with my coffee and I’m good for the morning.

So, you could say, my protein powder budget is pretty high!

When I finished off my last bucket o’ protein powder, I began to add it to my cart and felt robbed at the price. Protein powder isn’t cheap, though I appreciate the convenience, it’s not great for my wallet.

That’s when I decided to look into the possibility of making my own protein powder.

Because what is protein powder?

Protein powder can be whey-based or plant-based.

Whey-based protein is a mixture of proteins that have been extracted from whey which is a part of milk.

Plant-based protein can be in any form of nuts, seeds, legumes, and beans.

So it would stand to reason that creating your own protein powder would be extremely easy and cost-effective!

How to make your own protein powder

There are a wide range of variations. But I was able to put together this easy, three-ingredient protein powder recipe which I feel satisfies the needs for protein powder.

It’s equal parts of (I started with a mix of 1/2 cup each):

  • Non-fat dry milk
  • Raw almonds
  • Raw peanuts

Blend it together until in powder form.

Place in an air-tight container or bag and use as normal.

You can add any other sweeteners to it or just about anything else that you’d like, even additional plant-based proteins.

These are the most accessible and affordable for me personally, but some other ideas would be:

  • Hemp seeds
  • Cocoa powder
  • Egg shell powder
  • Oats
  • Collagen
  • Flax meal
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Stevia
  • Powder peanut butter

I’ve found the best way to mix any protein powder is with a milk frother. This can be blended with water or coffee by using the milk frother.

It has a very nutty flavor (for obvious reasons), it doesn’t taste horrible when added to water, but I much prefer to add it to my coffee as it gives it a really nice additional flavor, but not overpowering.

Experiment with a few ingredients and see which ones you like best!

Enjoy your homemade protein powder!
