Is a kids fishing pole worth the investment?

In this article, we are going to take a look at what a kids fishing pole can really do and if they are worth the money.

So much has changed over the last 20 years in the world of recreational fishing especially when it comes to a kids fishing pole. From lures to rods, you can really go off the deep end, pun intended, when shopping for gear for yourself or family. One of the biggest things to consider is when and how you want to begin your child’s journey into the world of fishing. So many parents run to the store to grab the kits that are superhero or princess branded thinking that the chances of their kids actually catching a fish are low, so who cares how capable the rod and reel is.

Well, in some cases that could be true and it would be heavily dependent on where you are fishing and if you as the parent and guide to your kids happen to be a capable angler yourself. I have a clan myself with kids ranging from 3-9 and we spend a ton of time on the water in Northern Michigan. Just last summer I had my girls out on the dock with me and I set them up with poles because they were absolutely desperate to catch a fish. Unfortunately, what I had on hand were the dreaded barbie poles. Well, as I cast the first line in for my middle daughter and turned to do the same for my eldest we had a fish on the line. No sooner than when I turned around to see what the screaming was about the tip of the pole broke and shortly after the line did as well. I am still hearing about the one that got away as recently as yesterday.

This summer, I swore I would get the kids on their way with something more suitable to actually catching fish and a rig that they could use for the next few years. With that in mind, I tapped the brain of our resident in-house expert angler, Andy Husek, and we settled on two youth rods sold by Walmart to test out. Since I wanted to be sure the rigs would be capable, we went out on the waters of Lake St Clair in Southeast Michigan for a little pleasure cruise in search of Walleye.

1. Ugly Stik GX2 Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Ugly Stik GX2 Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Walleye caught with the Ugly Stik GX2 Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

First up for the day was the Ugly Stik GX2 Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo. We paired this combo with the Berkley Trilene® Big Game™ Monofilament Fishing 8lb Line. This combo manufactured by Ugly Stick consists of a 2 piece medium action spinning rod, a grip design which is split for lighter weight and smaller hands, a 30 size spinning reel, and a machined anodized aluminum spool.

The rod was definitely not built for grown men, which is ok because we are not the intended users. We rigged the line with a 3lb weight, spoon, and worm and sent it on its way to do its thing in the water. We had 4 lines in total in the water and this combo was the first of the day to catch a fish. We weren’t looking to reel in any record setting fish and you can see by the picture that we caught a nice small walleye which any kid would be thrilled to land.

The rod worked well with clear strike indications and the reel was smooth and capable for the task. The overall length of the rod itself is 5’6″ which will be more than manageable for a child 4 or 5 years of age and up. Throughout the morning we caught 2 more walleye with this rig without any issues.

As far as being a capable and worthy rod for your brood, this is one to add to your cart.

Pros/Lightweight, easy to use, comfortable to hold, manageable size
Cons/More expensive, limited colors
Bottom Line/This combo from Ugly Stik would be a great choice for kids beyond their toddler years and up

2. Shakespeare Amphibian Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Shakespeare Amphibian Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Walleye caught with the Shakespeare Amphibian Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

With the first fish of the day secured, it was time for the Shakespeare Amphibian Youth Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo to see some action. We had the same set up as the Ugly Stik using the 8lb Berkley Trilene® Big Game™ Monofilament Fishing Line and tackle.

Shortly after our first catch, we had a strike on the Shakespeare combo, fish on! This rod and reel combo has very similar characteristics to the Ugly Stik combo with a 5’6″ medium 2-piece rod, but you can get this in three colors, blue, orange and pink. You also have the EVA split grips and a size 30 spinning reel pre-spooled with 6lb line, which we changed to the 8lb line before heading out on the water.

Overall we found this setup to be another very capable rod and reel combo which won’t break the bank. If you are looking for something with a few more color options, this one may win out over the Ugly Stik. It’s also half the price of the Ugly Stik Combo which is another perk.

Pros/Affordable, capable, 3 color options, easy to use and manage for youth anglers
Cons/Pre-spooled 6lb test may not be adequate
Bottom Line/Your kids will love this rod and based on the product reviews, it's a piece of gear that will last as long as your kids need it too.

3. Berkley Trilene® Big Game™ Monofilament Fishing Line 8lb | 3.6kg

Berkley Trilene® Big Game™ Monofilament Fishing Line 8lb | 3.6kg

We decided to beef up our line options on both of the rods before we headed out on to the water. Knowing that we could see varied size fish where we were going we wanted a little bit more insurance on the line in case we had an oversized fish take the bait. You can easily stick with the 6lb test that these rods come with or decide to go up a bit if you think your kids may see action on the line beyond what 6lb line can handle.

The Berkley Trilene® Big Game™ Monofilament Fishing Line 8lb worked very well for the application we were using it for. Of the 8 fish we caught for the day, we didn’t have a single line break. This line comes in 19 colors and various weights beyond 8lb as well.

Overall, Berkley is a staple in our tackle box because of years of use and reliable results.

Pros/Affordable, reliable, easy to use
Cons/Light weight
Bottom Line/If you are rigging up a youth combo, this is a great choice!

Should I skip a spincaster and go right to a spinning reel for my kids?

This is really going to depend on how comfortable you think your kids will be with the slightly more advanced function of a spinning reel. The spincaster has the age old “push button” design of the barbie combo rods of old and are certainly easier to use for the absolute beginner.

It will be easier for your kids to transition into the life of an adult angler if you start them earlier on a spinning reel like the ones featured in this article.

Ugly Stik GX2 - Most helpful customer review from Walmart.com

4 out of 5 stars

Subject – Awesome kids rod.

My two girls have been fishing these rods hard for a couple seasons now and the rods are great. Most short rods seem to have light or ultralight actions and several years ago it was hard to find a rod that small children can use to catch larger species of fish. Thanks to Shakespeare that problem has been solved. The reels are junk however, neither reel lasted more than a single season. If I could purchase the rod without the reel I would give it 5 stars, as is its still the best option out there.
