13th Annual Muzzy Classic Boasts Great Turnout

Known as one of the top bowfishing tournaments in the country, the 13th Annual Muzzy Classic, held April 28-29, 2012, at Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Ala., boasted a great turnout of 189 participants comprising 61 teams. Participants competed for thousands of dollars in prize money and prizes including a 1st place check for $3,500 – one of the largest payouts in bowfishing tournaments. Blessed with beautiful weather, participants arrowed numbers of impressive fish and had a great time in the process.

Big Fish award went to Doug Hunter.

The 1st place spot and $3500 went to the team of Tommy Woods and Scott Baxter of Georgia and Matthew McCrary of Alabama with an amazing take of 439.6 pounds. The 2nd spot and $2000 was awarded to the team of Michael Evans, Bud Fleming and Jeff Moomey of Georgia with 413.8 pounds. Jerry Broadneaux, Chad Sullivan and Todd Wingo of Georgia scored 3rd place and $1,000 with 396.2 pounds. The 4th place prize of $750 went to Trey Morris, Dwayne Campbell and Daniel Martin of South Carolina with a 381.6-pound catch. Jacky Davis and Matt Clayton of Oklahoma and Doug Hunter of Texas won 5th place and $500 for their catch of 357.4 pounds. And, $400 and 6th place was awarded to Will Mattox, Darrell Bowman and Adam Wright of Alabama for their catch of 357 pounds.

Muzzy also awarded prizes to the participants with the largest fish in each category. The Big Fish winner, Doug Hunter of Texas, won a guided trip with New Wave Archery for his bighead carp weighing in at 91 pounds. Trey Morris of South Carolina won a PSE Wave bow for his 71.6 pound grass carp. Blake Sayers of Alabama won a DLC Covert Trail Cam for his 28.6-pound carp. An AMS Fire Eagle bow was awarded to Adam Wright of Alabama for his 50-pound buffalo, and Matt Rigsby of Alabama won a Mathews Drenalin bow for his 60 1/8-inch gar.

Muzzy Classic contestants experienced a great night of bowfishing

Remaining teams got to select items from an impressive prize table generously provided by the tournament’s sponsors.

“I want to thank our wonderful sponsors and volunteers for making this tournament a success,” Mark Land, Muzzy Classic event coordinator, says. “I also want to thank the city of Guntersville, especially Dink Myers, and all local law enforcement who supported and worked with us to make this shoot happen. I’d also like to give a big thanks to Miguel at the Outlaw Steak House for providing all participants a free buffet breakfast at his restaurant. Thanks to our participants as well for having a good time, following the rules and being conscientious about this beautiful resource at our disposal.”
