Video: Bull Elk Takes Pre-Rut Bath in a Wallow Pit

You might have heard of an elk wallow, but you probably have never seen one up close like this before. This video is just awesome all around. Not only is the quality top-notch, but it displays a stud bull elk partaking in a pre-rut bath in a wallow pit.

Bull elk typically give themselves these muddy baths prior to and during the rut to attract a mate. Wallow pits may look dirty, but the ladies (cow elk) can’t resist it when the bulls show up to the party smelling like mud and urine. (I’m thinking that while this might work for bull elk, guys like me should stick to showering first.)

You have to appreciate capturing behavior like this on camera. Elk are especially shy, so seeing wallowing action like this is really cool!
