Video: Jumbo-Size Crayfish Found in Kentucky Water Intake Plant

A jumbo-size crayfish was found by a utility worker at a water intake plant, and experts are claiming it’s the biggest they’ve ever seen.

The crayfish was discovered dead inside the filtration system at the BGMU Chestnut Street intake plant located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. According to WNKY, the worker responsible for the find recognized its significance and transported the crustacean to Western Kentucky University so an expert could take a closer look.

There, Dr. Steve Huskey, a professor of biology, is now preserving the jumbo-sized critter.

Huskey reportedly contacted the Illinois Natural History Survey, which has a collection of more than 90,000 crustaceans. The crayfish in question here, however, (which measured 10-inches long) is apparently six millimeters longer than any crayfish in said collection.

“When I fist laid my eyes on this thing, my jaw dropped,” Huskey said. “I thought he brought in a lobster from Florida and tried to pawn it off as a crawdad. It’s absolutely enormous!”

The crayfish is currently being held at WKU until the semester concludes, at which point it will be transferred to the Natural History Survey in Illinois for scientists to research.
