[SHOT Show 2020] New from Savage: Renegauge, 410 Turkey Guns, and More

One of my happy tasks at the 2020 SHOT Show Range Day was checking out the new Renegauge shotgun from Savage. This is the semi-auto scattergun Savage announced on January 3, 2020. I stopped by and fired the Renegauge after getting a rundown on its design and operation.

Savage tells us the Renegauge is unlike any other shotgun ever made before. It sports a pair of valves in its gas “D.R.I.V.” system, which regulate the amount of gas required to operate the action. Light 2-3/4″ loads or high-brass 3″ shells (or anything in between) will cycle the action reliably — and with no adjustment from the user.

On top of that, D.R.I.V. actually vents unnecessary gases outside of the action rather than dumping it all into the forearm section, which means the Renegauge should be one of the cleanest-running gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns ever.

The gun itself handled well, and the butt stock is adjustable in length of pull, comb height, drop, and cast so you can ensure your Renegauge will fit you well.

There’s a “stock rod buffer” at the rear of the receiver, which I’d liken to a recoil buffer in a 1911 pistol or Browning BAR rifle. It cushions the action bar to reduce felt recoil.

I dry fired the Renegauge, because some of us need a good trigger for shooting slugs, hunting turkeys, or the like. I found its trigger to be “creepy but not too bad” as I look back at my notes.

Renegauge is not yet in production, but they are hoping to have them available before long.

While at their booth, I also fired the Stevens “301 Turkey Obsession” single-shot 410 shotgun. This one had a good trigger and I consistently hit a steel tree target at about 30 yards, which is pretty impressive with the scrawny 410. At the Show, I learned that this turned out to be one of Savage’s top-selling firearm in 2019.

Here are some other highlights from Savage’s new stuff for 2020:

110 Ultralite

The 110 Ultralite is a lightweight rifle to be offered in a number of chamberings for 2020. True to its name, the one I handled at the Show was certainly not too heavy.
