NEW from Northland – The Smeltinator Underspin Jig
Eugene L. 12.29.23
Northland Fishing Tackle has announced the release of its new Smeltinator Underspin Jig. This follows closely behind the announcement of the Northland Smeltinator Jig a couple of weeks back. The new underspin model though comes with some added flashy new features. As with the original Smeltinator Jig, the Underspin also comes with an ultra-sharp, ultra-strong Gamakatsu hook that has been cast into a beautifully sculpted baitfish pattern head. The plastics-securing hook collar is the same as well, make sure your plastic doesn’t slide out of place on the first strike. The key new feature though is the compact, nickel-plated willow blade added under the head. This blade adds tons of flash and vibration that imitates small baitfish. To attach the lightweight blade there is a SPRO ball-bearing swivel. This lets the blade spin instantly on contact with the water, so your lure is flashing and flickering the whole time it is in the water. Even with minimal jigging action or super-slow retrieve speeds the blade will spin effortlessly. Pair the Smeltinator Underspin Jig with a 2.5- to 7-inch soft plastic jerkbait or swimbait and let it work its magic, on those hard-to-fool suspended bass. Or fish the Underspin in deep water over deepwater structure on wintertime bass that are schooling offshore. The Smeltinator Underspin Jig is available in limited quantities now with an MSRP of $7.99

The Smeltinator Jig took the spotlight on Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson’s 2023 Bassmaster Classic victory, but it wasn’t the first time Gussy stacked big weights and solid limits of smallmouth bass on the Tennessee River out of Knoxville, Tennessee. Back in March of 2021, Gussy first put the “moping” technique to use, sinking Kenora, Ontario-designed Smeltinator Jigs to fill his ‘well for weigh-in at the 2021 Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite. Gussy went wire-to-wire for four days of the event, weighing 63 pounds, besting second place by an impressive seven pounds. Gussy trailered home to the far north with over $100,000 in his pocket.
