New Landmark Study of Leech Lake Muskie Launched by MN-FISH
Eugene L. 04.16.25

MN-Fish, a state fishing organization, has funded a new study on Leech Lake Muskie Movement and Survival that is to launch this Spring. As anglers have found increased success in targeting post-spawn trophy-class muskies that are often moving to deep-water areas with advanced electronics. The effects of this added pressure on these large fish are not fully understood yet. So, this new study aims to gather data on the effect of added angling pressure using state-of-the-art telemetry devices to track Leech Lake muskie movements in deep water and determine the mortality rate of muskies that have been caught and released. Leech Lake was chosen for this new study by the DNR because of its existing and vital role in the state as the primary source of stocked muskie fisheries across Minnesota. Every year during the first week of May, adult muskies on Leech Lake are captured by the DNR to act as the brood and egg stock for Minnesota’s Mississippi-strain muskie stocking programs.
“The information provided by the 3-year study will be a significant step forward in muskie conservation and address growing concerns among some anglers about sustaining muskie populations in the face of advancing fishing technologies and angler skill.” – MN-FISH president, Ron Schara
This study has been designed to help the DNR effectively manage not only Leech Lake muskie fishing but muskie fishing throughout the state. In addition to MN-FISH and the Minnesota DNR, the Leech Lake Muskie Movement and Survival Study will be conducted by researchers from Bemidji State University, led by Dr. Andrew Hafs.
The Non-Profit MN-FISH has steadfastly dedicated to preserving Minnesota’s sport fishing legacy, with a multifaced effort to not only improve the angling experience across the state but also strengthen the fishing industry by creating steady demand for fishing guides and equipment and also by generating hundreds of millions in tax revenues for the state. MN-FISH does not receive any money from the State or Government and is supported solely by private donations and bi-annual fishing auctions.
Private donations are being accepted to support the Leech Lake muskie study. If you would like to donate online, please check out www.MN-FISH.com/donate.
