A Gun for Every House? Georgia Town May Mandate Gun Ownership

Far from the recent trend of banning firearms, the small town of Nelson, Georgia could adopt a law that would require every household to own a gun.
The proposed law was approved with a unanimous vote by Nelson’s city council. The bill will now be reviewed by the citizens before returning to the council again in April.
According to CNN, during the meeting councilman Duane Cronic said, “Basically this is a deterrent ordinance. It’s no more than putting a sign in your front yard saying that ‘ADT protects this home.’ Now the person that may be there [checking] your home out to cause harm to you or your family to break into your house has to decide, ‘When I break that door down, what’s on the other side of that door?’”
A portion of Nelson’s proposal reads, “In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.”
According to Cronic, the law would allow families to protect themselves “without worrying about prosecution for protecting themselves.” The ultimate goal would be to reduce crime by increasing firearm ownership.
Those with physical or mental disabilities, along with felons, would be exempt from the law. In addition, those who oppose gun ownership because of personal beliefs or religious reasons would also be exempt.
