Remington Green that is. The first GUNS Magazine issue of the New Year comes packed full of entertaining features and informative coverage of all-things firearms. An imposing pair of Remington 1911s grace the cover of the January 2013 issue, which is bound to create some noise in the flourishing sphere of 1911s.
Remington recently took to the 1911 arena with the arrival of the R1 and R1S in .45 ACP. Contributing editor Mike “Duke” Venturino observed Remington had revamped some shortcomings of original 1911s, like including modern sights, to ensure the R1 and R1S operate flawlessly.
“Remington wisely made both front and rear sights dovetailed. Both are high profile using the 3-dot system for low-light conditions,” Venturino writes. “Anyone already familiar with 1911s is certainly going to feel at home with Remington’s new pistols. It’s good to see such a major name in American arms-making on 1911s again.”
Avid varmint hunters should take notice of Mossberg’s Varmint-Predator (MVP) line of stylistic and contemporary bolt-action rifles that accept AR magazines and come equipped with a multitude of novel features. After a day of plinking with the MVP Varmint, contributing editor Holt Bodinson almost ran out of superlatives describing its capabilities.
“From muzzle to butt, Mossberg’s MVP bespeaks of exceptional design, quality and features normally associated with only custom guns,” reports an admiring Bodinson. “Mossberg’s MVP Varmint is a red-blooded, American-made best buy.”
This issue of GUNS also includes a historical focus, with a look at the development of rifle stock materials from sticks to synthetics and the German Strurmtruppen’s favored companion of the Great War: The Kar 98.
