If you felt a little déjà vu during today’s Skeet medal presentations at the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC), you weren’t the only one.
Phillip Jungman (Caldwell, Texas) and Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) successfully defended their Men’s and Women’s Skeet titles today, despite the wind and rainy conditions. For Jungman, today’s win marks his third Overall title in Men’s Skeet at NJOSC. He also won last year’s Junior Men’s Skeet title at the National Championships for Shotgun.
Champions at NJOSC are determined by individual scores during the five Qualification rounds, plus additional points earned during the medal matches: Five for first place, four for second, all the way down to one point for fifth and sixth place.
Jungman and Vizzi also won each of their respective “gold-medal matches,” and along with their titles, each received a $500 scholarship from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). Scholarships were also awarded to the overall gold medalists in Men’s and Women’s Trap.
Zachary McBee (Gilbert, Arizona) would take the silver medal on the Men’s side, and with his second-place finish, earned an appointment to the Junior National Team. Jungman was already a member of the team when he qualified for the Junior team that will compete at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championships in Spain in September. Bronze medalist Granger DeWitt (Bryan, Texas) was also reappointed to the Junior National Team.
Fourth-place finisher Will Thomas (West Des Moines, Iowa) earned an appointment to the Junior Olympic Squad.
The Junior Women’s team for the World Championship once again proved their prowess on the skeet field by taking all three medals in Women’s Skeet (pictured). Vizzi was joined on the podium by National Junior Teammates Hannah Houston (Columbia, Tennessee) who won the silver medal and Sydney Carson (North Liberty, Indiana) who won bronze.
Vizzi had built such a sizeable lead during the Qualification rounds that no one would have been able to catch her following the medal matches. Vizzi also won silver in this event at NJOSC in 2012.
Fourth-place finisher Kendall Reed (Azle, Texas) was also appointed to the Junior Olympic Squad.
Shotgun athletes will once again have the chance to compete for team slots, as well as National Champion titles at the USA Shooting National Championships for Shotgun August 1 – 10 in Colorado Springs.
