The California Department of Fish and Wildlife approved Hunter Ed Course as an official online hunter education course for California residents to use to earn their hunter education card.

All first-time resident hunters are required to complete hunter education, regardless of age, and earn their hunter education card in order to purchase their California hunting license. The goal of requiring residents to pass a California Hunter Safety Course is to produce safe and ethical hunters.

Hunter Ed Course provides an easy, comprehensive learning process for online hunter education. The course features lessons on safe, legal and responsible hunting practices. The learning is delivered with narration, closed captioning, photos and interactive animations so the learner is able to hear, read, see and interact with the content. Unique to Hunter Ed Course is the use of photos that replicate what a hunter will actually will see in the field creating a safer hunter.
Taking an online hunter safety course provides a new user with the convenience of learning about safe, ethical hunting when and where the student wants to learn.
After successful completion of the California online hunter safety course, a student will print their Follow-up Home Study/Online Class completion voucher and attend the four-hour follow-up home study class conducted by a certified California hunter education instructor.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife schedules and conducts the follow-up home study class at various locations across the state. The schedule is posted and a student registers at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife web site.
