Using the Burris Veracity PH while hunting South African Plains Game

We just returned from an amazing trip across the pond where we were hunting plains game in the Limpopo province of South Africa.  As always, Africa did not disappoint, and we were able to put some new gear from some amazing brands through the gauntlet that is Africa.  Hot, dry, hot, dusty, hot, rugged, hot, rocky, hot….all the perfect components to test how a product will actually hold up in real world field situations.  Did I mention it was hot?

Earlier this year at SHOT Show, Burris launched the all-new Veracity PH and I couldn’t wait to get it in the field and check it out.  We were able to use it immediately following the launch on an Axis deer hunt down in Texas but that was just a dry run for the true test we had in mind, our trip to Africa.

Africa would be a perfect setting to utilize and showcase exactly what the Veracity PH was designed to do, and that is to dial to exact distances in a matter of seconds when pursuing game.  The nature of hunting in Africa is not too dissimilar to that of a Western US hunt although the landscape and elements are a quite a bit different.  Spot and stalk is the most successful means of hunting in Africa and not unlike hunting Elk or Mule deer out West, you never really know how close or how far away game is going to appear.

That is the beauty of the Veracity PH, once you have downloaded the Burris connect app, loaded all your rifle and ballistic data and zeroed the rifle you are all set to immediately start hunting with the confidence of being able to shoot at 50 to 500 yards and beyond.  In a traditional long-distance hunting situation, you would have to find the game, range the game, figure out ballistic data from an app or dope card, then dial your turret based on distance and then execute your shot.  Granted other people’s processes may vary but there are several steps that just take up valuable time and cannot be skipped.

With the PH you simply need to range the target, dial to that exact distance as displayed in the HUD (Heads Up Display) within the scope and execute the shot.  This is such a game changer, especially on spot and stalk hunts where you could come around a corner and have an animal standing at 50 yards or you could spot something at 700 yards.  You will be amazed at how much faster you can setup and execute your shot with the Veracity PH.  The scope performed flawlessly, held zero the entire time despite being jostled about by the Land Cruiser and always dialed perfectly when it came time to shoot.  I shot a total of 5 animals while I was there, and the distances varied from 30 yards all the way out to several hundred and everything in between.  That is why the PH is so perfect for this type of hunt.  There are plenty of other variables you must worry about when stalking game.  When the time comes to shoot an all you must do is get an accurate range and dial to that number it makes the whole process a lot simpler.

The Veracity PH come in a 4-20×50 configuration which is perfect for anything up close and out to extended ranges.  It has a 30mm tube and a 50mm objective to allow for a ton of light transmission and features the PEK (programmable Elevation Knob).  “The PEK (Programmable Elevation Knob) system provides ultimate dialling precision. After entering information into the app, hunters can easily use the PEK system to dial in elevation. This system combines a digital sensor with a click-less mechanical elevation turret for ultimate accuracy down to 1/10 MOA. Using the ballistics calculator from the app with digital elevation turrets, the Veracity PH’s PEK system makes dialling to distance easier than ever with peak speed, precision and performance.”
