OHUB Review: Shimano Stride FL Spinning Reel

As a saltwater angler who fishes the inshore marshes routinely, I’m always on the lookout for a great spinning reel. I had the opportunity to try out the Shimano Stradic FL Spinning Reel.

I took the reel on an inshore trip to the marsh near the Mississippi Coast. On my first cast, I  was immediately impressed by the Stride FL’s robust construction. The reel is exceptionally sturdy, with no hint of give or flex in any part of its design. It’s a really solid reel! Every component, from the gears to the reel seat and spool, works in perfect harmony, offering a seamless and play-free operation.

Shimano’s Silent Drive technology, comprised of three key elements, is what truly sets this reel apart.

First, the HAGANE Body design, with its rigid structure, minimizes flex and noise that often is a result from body movement.

Second, the MicroModule Gear system, characterized by smaller teeth and sprockets, delivers an ultra-smooth and silent retrieve.

Lastly, the G-Free Body design shifts the center of gravity closer to the angler’s hand, reducing fatigue during extended use. This ergonomic design ensures a comfortable experience, even during long fishing sessions.

During my field test, I used the Stradic FL on a Saturday morning to cast a spoon along the marsh’s shoreline in shallow waters. It withstood a barrage of redfish, ranging from 17 to 25 inches, and the reel’s drag system proved to be reliable under the pressure of these feisty fish.

While the Stradic FL’s drag system performed admirably, I did notice a slight lack of smoothness compared to my other inshore reels. However, this minor drawback was overshadowed by the reel’s overall performance, making it one of my favorite reels in my arsenal. Later in the afternoon, I used the Stradic FL to tackle freshwater bass in deeper parts of the marsh, and it handled the task with finesse, further showcasing its versatility.

If you’re seeking a spinning reel that can excel in both freshwater and saltwater environments, the Shimano Stradic FL Spinning Reel is the ideal choice. It proved to be a reliable companion, enduring the brackish marsh conditions throughout the entire weekend. This reel is truly a versatile and dependable angler’s tool.
