Cabo San Lucas Offshore Bite Heating Up!

I’ll admit that living in Southeast Louisiana has me focused on our fantastic fisheries. Our speckeld trout and redfishing is the best in the country. Add to it the offshore bite, and red snapper season being open and I have a full slate when it comes to fishing.

But there is another kind of fishing that I keep tabs on and that is the offshore, deepwater bite off the Atlantic shoreline in Mexico. For those who are visiting Cabo, Mexico, I highly recommend making a trip off the Baja Penisula.

My friend Arturo Chacon is with Tag Cabo Sportfishing and consistlenty keeps me updated with what’s going on in their local waters. Chacon says the water temperatures are hovering between 75-80 F.   And the warm waters off Cabo San Lucas are bustling with activity, attracting a wide variety of pelagic fish.

Below is a quick guide for each type of species that Chacon recomends targeting in July:

Striped Marlin

Location: Sea of Cortez, 5 to 10 miles offshore

Details: The striped marlin bite has been outstanding. Anglers are experiencing plenty of action, with numerous marlins being hooked and released. The warm water temperatures are ideal for these magnificent fish, making them a prime target.

Wahoo and Dorado

Location: Punta Gorda and El Iman Bank

Details: Both wahoo and dorado are thriving in these areas. Anglers trolling and using live bait have reported successful catches. The wahoo are known for their speed and challenge, while dorado are providing exciting fights and vibrant colors to the day’s haul.

Groupers and Snappers

Location: Various structured areas, 100 to 300 feet deep

Details: Bottom fishing for groupers and snappers has been productive. These fish are being caught in good numbers, especially around areas with significant underwater structure. Deep-sea anglers targeting these species are having great success.

Roosterfish and Jack Crevalle

Location: Inshore, surf fishing right from the beach

Details: The inshore action is heating up with roosterfish and jack crevalle available right from the beach. Surf fishing enthusiasts are enjoying catching these hard-fighting fish close to shore, making for an exciting and accessible fishing experience.
