Must Have Products to Keep You Comfortable at Whitetail Deer Camp

Fall can bring warm weather or an unexpected Arctic blast, which is why preparation is key. Let’s take a look at some of our top picks to help make this fall’s whitetail season one of your most comfortable and successful yet.

Here we are, just weeks away from another Whitetail opener and it’s hard to believe that we have had almost a year to share stories from camp and plan for our next outing. You may have bagged a monster buck, a doe to fill your freezer, or just froze in some of the most extreme Midwest temperatures we have seen in years. No matter what your season looked like, you were no doubt looking forward to your next.

With a year to consider what went right and what went wrong, it’s time to finalize your gear list and get ready. I know I personally had some takeaways from last year, especially considering we had a brutal winter blaster on opening day with high’s below 20 degrees and relentless snow. While I can’t predict the weather this year, I can make sure that I am ready for anything.

While you may be thinking of what you are going to need in the field, it’s also very important that you don’t overlook what you are going to need at camp. Let’s face it, Whitetail hunting is just as much about the time you spend around a fire with friends as it is about the time in the field alone. Creature comforts while you are away from home will not only keep you comfortable but also could be the difference between getting a great nights sleep or tossing around in your sleeping bag all night.

With that said, let’s dive in to the top products that will keep you warm, dry, and having a great time this fall.

1. Cabela’s 13’x27′ Ultimate Alaknak Outfitter Tent

The Cabela’s 13’x27′ Ultimate Alaknak Outfitter Tent at our South Texas Deer Camp

Let’s kick things off with one of the most important items for any camp, your tent. I have an absolute obsession with the Cabela’s 13’x27′ Ultimate Alaknak Outfitter Tent. We have used this tent in extreme heat and brutal cold and when I say this tent is one of the best I have stayed in, I mean it.

Wall tents are in a class of their own when it comes to “mobile housing”. This tent could easily accommodate 6 hunters sleeping on cots, your gear, a folding table, chairs and more. Not only can you sleep in this tent, but you can also use it as a common space for relaxing and cooking. When you add that to the fact that it has two included exhaust holes for wood burning stoves, you can be unbelievably comfortable in cold weather.

We used this tent to house 4 hunters and ran a wood burner which kept the temperature in the 60’s while the outside temps dipped into single digits. Having a comfortable place to hang out and sleep made all the difference in the world.

Alaknak

Pros/Large, wood burning stove compatible, durable construction
Cons/Price, requires two people to set up, may not be sturdy in extreme winds
Bottom Line/If you want to sleep in comfort, this tent will not let you down!

2. Camp Chef Explorer 2-Burner Camp Stove

Camp Chef Explorer 2-Burner Camp Stove

Your meals are just as important as where you lay your head and one of the worst things in cold weather is waiting around for your food to get hot. Personally, we love having a nice stove on site whenever we are camping. It provides us the ability to quickly fire up a burner or two to heat water for coffee or cook a hot meal after a long day of hunting.

The Camp Chef Explorer 2-Burner Camp Stove gives you the best of both worlds, a compact and portable stove that is just as capable of cooking a nice meal as your range at home. You can also get the optional carry bag to make transport a breeze.

Pros/Easy to transport, uses propane, afforable
Cons/limited cook space, not an option for backcountry hunting
Bottom Line/This stove will cook almost anything you throw at it without breaking the bank!

3. Cabela's Instinct Scout 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag

Cabela's Instinct Scout 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag

When it comes to sleeping bags, I would rather go overboard and be too hot than bring a bag that is not properly rated for my surroundings. The Cabela’s Instinct Scout 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag is not going to be your summer time camping bag, but it will be your best friend on a cold night.

Not only did I use this sleeping bag during deer season, I also took this exact model with me to the Northern Brooks Range of Alaska on our recent Caribou hunt. The bag compresses down to a really nice size, is rated to 0°F and is the true definition of “mummy bag”. You can fully encapsulate yourself inside this sleeping tomb and stay warm and comfortable all night.

Pros/0°F rated, ample compression size, lightweight
Cons/Not suitable for warmer temperatures, feet area somewhat small
Bottom Line/For cold weather, this bag is a perfect match

4. Crocs All-Terrain TrueTimber Clogs for Men

Crocs All-Terrain TrueTimber Clogs for Men

Ok, I know what you are thinking…Crocs? Yes, I cannot recommend Crocs enough as a camp slipper.

While Crocs have received an incredibly bad rap, almost to the level of the 90’s era Jnco Jeans trend, they are incredibly functional. Anyone who has spent even just a night sleeping in a tent knows that it can be a huge pain to have to use your hiking/hunting boots around camp. You really want to have a nice pair of shoes that slip on and off easily when you enter your sleeping space and Crocs do just that.

Crocs also have the benefit of being easy to clean and to be honest, incredibly comfortable for casual wear. Also, if you are anything like me, sometimes I just buy things like this to annoy my wife. It’s the little things in life.

Pros/Lightweight, durable, easy to clean
Cons/You won't win any fashion awards, open design allows water in
Bottom Line/What can I say, Crocs are functional and to me, it's always function over fashion

5. Cabela's Camp Cot with Organizer

Cabela's Camp Cot with Organizer

Last up is the Cabela’s Camp Cot with Organizer. This is another product that I have had the benefit of using in various locations, including Alaska.

As far as cots go, you want something that is comfortable, easy to set up, and easy to transport. This cot does all of that but, what I really love is the organizer which drapes over the side.

I know we all want to unplug when we hit the woods, but it can be difficult to do if you are used to reading on your phone or playing a game before bed to unwind. The organizer has a ton of storage to drop your phone into before bed, keep a flashlight handy, or any other items you typically keep on your bedside table.

Pros/Comfortable, ample storage
Cons/Weight
Bottom Line/This is currently my favorite cot on the market and I highly recommend it
