Writer’s Guidelines
OutdoorHub.com is an online publication focused on entertaining, educating, and informing dedicated outdoorsmen and women, with a particular focus on hunters, anglers, and shooters. If you are interested in contributing to our website, read through these writer’s guidelines to see how you might fit into our ecosystem. Our most engaging content, which consists of news, feature stories, how-to guides, opinion pieces, and product reviews, is distributed through a daily email Newswire to tens of thousands of readers and media professionals.
News items are typically assigned to and generated by our in-house team of writers, but we are open to publishing reporting on timely, engaging topics from outside contributors. These articles should be 300 to 700 words and accompanied by at least one image produced by the author or for which the author has explicit permission to use in association with their content.
Feature stories should cover a given topic, experience, personality, or event in-depth (for example, a successful hunt, a particularly memorable day on the water, or a fun experience at the range) in an accessible way. These feature articles should be 750 to 1,500 words long and accompanied by two to three images produced by the author or for which the author has explicit permission to use in association with their content.
Examples of OutdoorHub.com feature stories:
- The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Breaking the Ice
- The Cody Firearms Museum: More Guns Than You Can Shake a Gun At
- Whitetail Vision: Shedding Light on Deer Eyesight
- The Story Behind the Drowning Buck Ax Rescue
- Lake St. Clair Muskies Come On Strong
How-to or instructional guides are also published on a daily basis and contributions from new writers are welcome. These guides should be focused on a single topic (such as bowhunting, bass fishing, or skeet shooting) and improving a reader’s ability with regard to that topic. These articles should be 500 to 1,000 words long and be accompanied by two to three images produced by the author or for which the author has explicit permission to use in association with their content.
Examples of OutdoorHub.com how-to guides:
- How to Beat the Shore-bound Blues
- The Seven Deadly Sins of Handgun Shooting: The Cup and Saucer Grip
- Dog Training in Hot Weather
- Shotgun Mount: The Foundation of Successful Wingshooting
Opinion pieces should clearly and concisely express the author’s opinion on a topic pertinent to hunters, fishers, or shooters. Strictly political (“Democrats are bad because of this” or “Republicans are bad because of this”) opinion pieces will not be accepted for publication. Opinion pieces should run in the 750 to 1,500-word range and be accompanied by at least one image produced by the author or for which the author has explicit permission to use in association with their content.
Examples of OutdoorHub.com opinion pieces:
- Carrots and Sticks: Incentives for Ethical Hunters
- The Sad, Strange, and Ineffective Story of the Canadian Firearms Registry
OutdoorHub.com product reviews should objectively examine a given product on its features and merits for the outdoorsmen and women it is intended for, including firsthand, in-the-field use. Common topics of investigation include value for price, reliability, and quality, though these may vary from product to product. Usage of OutdoorHub.com’s Trusted Review Scorecard is encouraged, but not mandatory. Product reviews should be 500 to 1,000 words in length and accompanied by at least one image produced by the author or for which the author has explicit permission to use in association with their content. More detailed product review guidelines are available upon request.

Standards and Values
OutdoorHub.com holds its writers to high standards of accuracy and integrity. To that end, we will always openly cite (and link to, when possible) sources of information. We will always publicly acknowledge corrections to factual errors in article text. Occasionally OutdoorHub.com works with certain advertisers and companies to produce articles and reviews. Any collaboration of this sort will be indicated in the text of an article or media associated with it.
We strive to produce content that is written from an authentic pro-sportsman perspective, yet still objective.
OutdoorHub.com also publishes press releases from advertisers and companies. Effective 6-2-2014, these releases are published as such and their authorship is indicated on the article’s page.
OutdoorHub.com occasionally works directly with companies or their representatives to conduct product reviews. While these remain objective, we always seek to disclose the exact manner by which an OutdoorHub staff member or writer has acquired a product for review.
Should you feel that an OutdoorHub.com writer has violated any of these principles or have a complaint regarding ethics and values, please contact us at content@outdoorhub.com.
